I am at that stage in life when I have more time to watch television and yet loathe nearly every bit of entertainment I see in prime time. Instead, I am watching the presidential debates, hoping for some lively exchanges on education.
That hasn’t happened. The Republicans dismiss the Common Core State Standards, the hot issue of the moment, in two words or fewer. The standards are “a disaster,” Donald Trump said.
Happy Monday! We’re back to a regular schedule after a shifting lineup the last couple weeks. Send news tips to: cristiano.lima@washpost.com.

Meta rejected scores of women’s sexual health ads. Democrats want answers.
A group of congressional Democrats is urging the Federal Trade Commission to look into allegations that tech giant Meta is discriminately rejecting sexual-health advertisements targeted for women while allowing those aimed at men — a possible violation of federal law.
How do you roast the woman who has everything together? Seriously. Poking fun at a 40-year-old mother of three who does bicep curls in stilettos while sporting gorgeous hair and packing a gourmet lunch made by a handsome husband just seems so … impossible.
The answer on Thursday night, as Norah O’Donnell’s friends and colleagues managed “a browning toast, not like a charring,” as one producer put it, was to kill ’em with kindness.
O’Donnell, co-host of “CBS This Morning”, was being honored with punchlines (plus a fancy award) at the American News Women’s Club’s annual gala.

In yet another demonstration of the Internet’s bottomless lows — and of Twitter’s still-uncontrolled abuse problems — Robin Williams’s daughter signed off Twitter for “a good long time” Tuesday night after receiving menacing messages from two trolls on the service.
I’m sorry. I should’ve risen above. Deleting this from my devices for a good long time, maybe forever. Time will tell. Goodbye.
— Zelda Williams (@zeldawilliams) August 13, 2014The trolls’ accounts, @PimpStory and @MrGoosebuster, have since been suspended by Twitter, but not before tweeting Photoshopped images of Williams that appeared to show him with bruises around his neck, as if he were in a morgue.
While fans of the murder mystery genre count the weeks until the release of “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” the eagerly anticipated sequel to 2019’s twisty, sharply funny “Knives Out,” they can take the edge off their appetite with “See How They Run.” Starring Sam Rockwell and Saoirse Ronan as a pair of odd-couple Scotland Yard officers investigating a theater-world murder in 1950s London, this larky meta-whodunit both subverts and pays homage to “The Mousetrap,” Agatha Christie’s famously long-running play.

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has beaten Arsenal counterpart Mikel Arteta to the Manager of the Year prize at the 2024 London Football Awards.
Postecoglou has been honoured at the annual event after helping to transform Tottenham since his arrival from Celtic last summer.
The Australian has overcome the sale of club record goalscorer Harry Kane to lead Spurs to fifth in the Premier League.
Tottenham will be aiming to secure a return to Champions League football, after missing out on Europe altogether following a miserable campaign last season.
The NBA announced Friday that Indiana Pacers guard Tyreke Evans has been “dismissed and disqualified” for at least two years after he violated the terms of the league’s anti-drug policy.
Per league rules, the NBA, the Pacers and the National Basketball Players Association are not allowed to disclose information surrounding the ban, other than to announce it.
The nature and length of Evans’s ban applies to “drugs of abuse” rather than marijuana or a first-time performance-enhancing drugs violation.
